I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Tuisem Shishak for his recent “confes-sion” that appeared in the local dailies. Self-reflection and the acknowledgement of shortcomings and failures is always a difficult task. Dr. Shishak has admirably and bravely “confessed” in true Christian spirit; indeed, he has reminded us that all have fallen short, and we Nagas cannot hold individual persons or individual groups accountable for our crises. As Christians, we must likewise admit our collective guilt. And perhaps we are already doing so. The local dailies reported today that the factions have declared a ceasefire. I applaud them wholeheartedly. After years of animosity and rivalry, this moment reminds us that we are all Nagas. United, the various national organizations emerge as winners, and by extension, the rest of the Nagas. This demonstration of accord is a far-reaching gesture as Nagas work towards peace. At the same time, Nagas must stay alert when antagonistic forces of division arise.
My prayer is that the Nagas remain loyal and committed to this pact. Only by giving peace a chance, will the rest follow, and so may the spirit of peace continue to prevail.
